Every day over 100,000 U.S. Coast Guard, Customs & Border Protection, Department of Agriculture, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and Maritime Administration personnel go to work in support of our national maritime industry.Under the partial government shutdown each of these agencies is presently unfunded.

From protecting our waterfront facilities, inspecting our cargo, watching over the safety of our vessels and mariners, and ensuring reliable navigation & forecast data, our federal maritime partners give their best so we can do business. In short, their tireless support allows us to conduct business in the first place.

The quality and true strength of a crew is usually revealed during stormy weather, and for our federal maritime partners the clouds are growing dark. Other agencies we rely on such as the Army Corps of Engineers are funded, but due to the recent partial government shutdown many of our partners are continuing to support our maritime industry without pay. We will not allow them to stand alone.

In response, we have made numerous inquiries to determine how we can channel support for our impacted federal partners. The Virginia Maritime Association and the Hampton Roads Shipping Association will each donate $5,000 towards relief through the following programs and we encourage our members and community to take similar actions.

While the duration of the partial shutdown is unknown, let’s ensure that these members of our maritime and trade community know that they can count on us to help see them through the storm.
