VMA Maritime Bulletin

On November 9, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released the Norfolk Harbor Navigation Improvements Draft General Reevaluation Report/Environmental Assessment (Draft GRR/EA) for public review and comment – with comments due by December 9

This project will affect all VMA members, and ALL VMA MEMBER COMPANIES are strongly encouraged to submit letters of support for the Wider-Deeper-Safer navigational channels as recommended by the Draft GRR/EA.  Attached you will find a template which you may use.

Letters must be submitted to the Corps of Engineers by December 9 and can be sent by Email to or send letters to:

The Draft GRR/EA recommends improving the Norfolk Harbor and Channels, Virginia navigation project to a depth of 55 feet deep in the Norfolk Harbor, Norfolk Harbor Entrance, and Newport News Channels; 56 feet deep and at least 1,200 feet wide in Thimble Shoal Channel; and 59 feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean Channel.

The projected cost would be approximately $322 million, split between the federal government ($147 million) and the state ($175 million).  The Corps of Engineers has determined the project will have a Benefit-Cost Ratio of 4.93 to 1, returning nearly $5 in national economic benefits for each dollar invested.

Action is needed to demonstrate strong and widespread support for the Wider-Deeper-Safer navigation channels that are now supported by the findings of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  There is no project more important in determining the future of our port and this project remains VMA’s top priority.
