A Clear Vision of Service

CNBC ranked Virginia as the #1 state for business in 2019, and The Port of Virginia’s commitment to providing its customers with safe, fast, and efficient service played a key role in that honor.

For 2020, the port’s vision is clear: do everything it can to provide its customers with the best possible service and make Virginia the #1 place for businesses in the country.

In July 2019, the port celebrated the completion of construction at the Virginia International Gateway Terminal. The port’s customers now enjoy twice the annual container capacity, the four largest ship to shore cranes in the Western Hemisphere working on its extended berth, and turn times at the truck gates averaging around the 30-minute mark – even with a 3% increase in volumes. Virginia’s Smart Stack® service is providing a fast and reliable rail product to the Midwest markets. In Fiscal Year 2019, Virginia again maintained its position as the U.S. East Coast’s leading rail port, in terms of percentage of cargo, having moved nearly 564,000 containers (or 34 percent of its total volume) by rail.

The expansion at Norfolk International Terminals is progressing according to schedule. When complete in the fall of 2020, NIT’s south terminal yard will provide the port’s customers with 30 new RMG-driven container stacks – a 46% increase in annual capacity – paired with a state-of-the-art reservation system, and two additional ship-to-shore cranes.

The expansion at the port’s two largest container terminals has enabled it to utilize its Portsmouth Marine Terminal and Newport News Marine Terminal as specialized cargo terminals – capable of efficiently handling high volumes of breakbulk, project, heavy lift, and ro-ro cargo. Dredges hit the port’s waters in December 2019 and our deepening and widening efforts are in full swing. By 2024, we’ll once again be the deepest port on the US East Coast with 55’ channels and two-way traffic for the largest vessels calling our coast.

Virginia is cementing its reputation as home to a world-class port and its world-class service. Businesses including Amazon, Rubbermaid Commercial Products, Bissel, Brother, and many more call Virginia home because of the efficient and economical move¬ment of their cargo to and from world markets.

The Port of Virginia has made the investments that the industry asked for. Its vision is clear and its path is set.
