“I'm here to congratulate the Virginia MAritime Association on its 100th year celebration. This 100th year celebration has special significance to me. Harry Thompson is my grandfather who passed away when I was very young. I see him as the grandfather that I used to sit on his lap and have family dinner with on sunday evenings. As I became involved in the business community here in Hampton Roads, I realized what a great individual and business person that he was. I approach this celebration with great pride on the behalf of my grandfather and I want to congratulate every business in this community who has come together to celebrate the VMA," said Mary Anne Strickland, grandaughter of VMA's first Executive Vice President Harry Thompson. Mary is the Vice President of Marsh & McLennan Agency, LLC.

At Marsh & McLennan, Link to the VMA Connects All the Way to Its Founding

For Marsh & McLennan Agency, membership in the VMA is more than maintaining an important business network.

There’s a personal connection too.

A global firm that specializes in business insurance, risk management, health benefits, loss control and surety, Marsh & McLennan has a branch based in Hampton Roads with 35 employees. It provides services to a variety of VMA members and understands the importance of the maritime economy to our region and the Commonwealth.

And one employee, in particular, carries with her the history of the VMA.

Vice President Mary Anne Strickland is the granddaughter of Harry M. Thompson, who founded the Norfolk Maritime Exchange that would eventually become the Virginia Maritime Association. Thompson served as the organization’s executive vice president and secretary for 46 years.

“I have great pride in what my grandfather created. He was honest, fair, compassionate and a visionary,” Strickland said. “Marsh & McLennan is thrilled to support VMA2020 and celebrate not only where we’ve been but also where we’re going.”

Senior Vice President & Division Manager Rusty Bailey echoes Strickland’s sentiment.

“Harry Thompson was such an advocate for the maritime industry, and it’s special to have a link to the past through Mary Anne,” said Bailey. “We believe in the importance of the VMA every year, but the 100 th anniversary is an opportunity to appreciate what the organization means to everyone who does business related to the port.”

Marsh & McLennan honors the VMA’s past but is also focused on the present. That’s why it participates in the VMA’s Future Leaders Group to groom up-and-coming young professionals (like their own employee, Chad Cherry).

Thanks, Marsh & McLennan, for decades of service to the maritime industry and the VMA!
