“VMA brings all the maritime industry together in this area. It’s one of the biggest channels of communication between all of us. Especially with the new growth we have coming in this area with the deepening project," explains Ashley Reese, Crewing Manager at Great Lakes.

"We’re really going to need to band all of the partners together, and I think VMA is a good starting point to bring the coast guard and industry partners together to achieve the goals we need in this area."

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Sees Ever-Expanding Role in Virginia

When it comes to deepening a waterway or replenishing a beach with sand, there’s a good chance Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company is involved.

The company, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, is the largest dredging operation in the US. And for the last ten years, Great Lakes has had a presence in Hampton Roads with some 20 full-time employees. In 2014, the company put down even deeper roots when it purchased an equipment yard in Norfolk. Now all of its ships come through the Norfolk area for repair and maintenance, then head back out for jobs along the East and Gulf Coasts.

Recently, Great Lakes performed replenishment work at Cape Henry, Willoughby Beach, Chicks Beach and the Oceanfront. And soon the company will bid to dredge the harbor in Hampton Roads to 55 feet to allow larger ships to enter our port.

With each passing year, the leadership team at Great Lakes recognizes the importance of maritime commerce in Virginia. That’s why it is proud to support the VMA’s 2020 anniversary celebration as a Visionary sponsor ($10,000).

“For us, the VMA is the best way to stay connected to the maritime community,” says Ashley Reese, the Great Lakes crewing manager in Norfolk. “The VMA provides open dialogue between all partners, helps to pass important bills and protects the community.”

As the VMA celebrates 100 years and ushers in a new century, Great Lakes intends to play an important role here in Virginia, keeping our channels wider, deeper and safer.
