NORFOLK | For ODU Port Day this year (October 7), the Virginia Maritime Association (VMA) suggested the idea of using a foghorn during the football game whenever ODU scored a touchdown.
Being a port town, the idea was taken to quickly, and Captain Westall, Vice President and General Manager of McAllister Towing, and his staff didn't hesitate to take on the challenge of making the foghorn in time for the game.
The horn is a self-contained, mobile air horn, the same type used every day by our tugs and ship's navigating our harbor.
Seeing how well received the horn was during the game by the fans and ODU administration, McAllister and VMA have decided to donate the horn to ODU contingent on the tradition that it be sounded after every touchdown.
"The horn will signify success on the field and remind fans of our port's heritage," explained Art Moye, Executive Vice President of the VMA.
ODU has hinted it may use it for other sports, such as soccer and baseball.
