A partnership of maritime organizations including, the Virginia Maritime Association, the Hampton Roads Shipping Association, Nauticus, Maritime Institute, Old Dominion University, Propeller Club Port of Norfolk, and Virginia Ship Repair Association are sponsoring a luncheon to celebrate National Maritime Day on May 22, 2007.
May 22 was designated as National Maritime Day by Congress in 1933 to recognize the contribution of The Savannah in the advancement of ocean transportation as the first steam propelled vessel which successfully crossed the Atlantic in 1819.
Each year the President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe National Maritime Day by displaying the American Flag to honor the United States Merchant Marines.
National Maritime Day has been observed locally over the years with small gatherings of maritime interests. This year, especially with the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, a more significant celebration is appropriate to commemorate National Maritime Day and to convey the importance of maritime commerce to our Nation and the local region.
